BACKGROUND

Moore Mining was formed by Rosco to take over the Reefton assets of former State owned enterprise Solid Energy NZ.
Operating since August 2017, we have retained Solid Energy’s customers and developed new markets. Our mines are operated using Rosco Contractors staff, plant and equipment.

COAL’S PLACE IN THE NEW ZEALAND ECONOMY

It’s above all about food production. In the South Island coal powers the dairy industry’s process plants generating steam, it is also widely in meat works and horticulture. It finds its place for heating schools and hospitals. We also help fulfill NZ sourced export coal orders.

THE FUTURE FOR COAL

Like many countries around the world, New Zealand is seeking a lower carbon future. It won’t be easy – low energy fuels such as bio-mass bring new problems including increased transport cost. Although its main use is as an energy source, coal is still essential to the production of most metals. In summary coal will continue to play a role as society transitions to low carbon.

PREMIUM STEAMING COAL

Moore Mining and sister company Boatmans Coal are the only suppliers of Reefton No.4 seam coal which has the reputation as the best steaming (thermal) coal in the Upper South Island. Two outstanding characteristics of No.4 coal are:
1) excellent burning characteristics for boilers due to its high reactivity
2) low sodium in ash – this is a problem with local competitor coals – high sodium is a cause of low ash fusion which in turn leads to fouling in boilers.

BLENDS

At our Coal and and Process Plant we process and customise coal blends to meet specific end user requirements. We can source a range of coal types from our Reefton mines and other local suppliers.
